Why We Don't Use Melatonin

The Cabinet — 01.11.22
by Team Hilma

If you’ve ever been in the market for a sleep aid, chances are you’ve come across an ingredient called melatonin in your search. Melatonin is a hormone that is produced by the brain when introduced to darkness, helping to promote sleep and to manage the timing of the circadian rhythm.

So if melatonin is such a powerful ingredient, then why don’t we use it at Hilma? When we sat down with the experts to formulate our product, we ultimately decided to leave it out due to its possible negative side effects, and to maintain the integrity of our mission to create natural solutions that are better for your health – short term and long term.

Possible negative side effects of melatonin:

Habit forming

Any time we take a hormone, our body may not process it the same as when we produce it ourselves. Regular use of melatonin affects your body’s natural production of the hormone and can therefore alter your natural ability to fall + stay asleep in the long run, resulting in dependence.

Drowsiness

Taking melatonin can have extended effects beyond when you’re actually asleep at night. Increased levels of the hormone disrupt cause keep you feeling sleepy for longer, meaning you may wake up drowsy the next morning.
